Indie Writer: JD Kell

Latest Work: Lunch

Q: How did Lunch come to be?

JD Kell: Actually, it’s based on my own struggles with an eating disorder and those of other women that I know.

Q: Do the characters touch on people in your life, or your life experience?

JD Kell: Both of the characters are a compsite of different emotions women experience with food. It’s really more about how women relate to one another, food, and their bodies. We are set up from the get go in society to compete, and I think for women, that’s especially tough — we’re taught to compare ourselves to other women, either in fashion magazines, or the girl down the block etc..Leslie and Jessica just want to be accepted for who they are, but society doesn’t accept them. Leslie tries to fill the hole by eating. Jessica goes the other way and starves herself.

Q: What new projects are you working on?

JD Kell: I am in the process of writing a collection of short stories about women and their relationship with food. There are a lot of situations that lend themselves to this topic. The title of the book is Hunger. It’s still in the conceptual process, one story at a time. I’m learning how to edit myself. Sometimes, I’ll read the same story a million times trying to get it perfect, and I get to the point where I can’t stand the thing anymore. And it’s still not there. The editing process is tedious, but I guess that’s the only way to get better at the craft of writing.

Q: There’s a big assumption Indie Writers are destined to fail. Hate to put you on the spot, but what’s your take on it?

JD Kell: I hope not. I think the internet has really changed the nature of media, and has opened up the doors for independent writers. It’s a lot easier to self publish on the internet, than it is to self publish through a print shop., and you have such a broader audience. I guess it all comes down to whether or not your goal is to entertain or make money.

Q:  Are you looking to be picked up by a publishing house, or take the independent route, or is all that a non-factor for you?

JD Kell: It’s nice to dream that someday I could make some money. I would like to see Hunger published by a publishing house, but the book has to be completed, before that can happen. I still need to develop as a writer – get used to rejection.

Q:  What got you into writing?

JD Kell: I like to read. I’ve always used books as a means of escape to some extent, and writing has the same draw to it. I enjoy it. I find it maddening, sometimes, looking for that right word or rephrasing something a million different ways, but when I like what I’ve written, it’s extremely satisfying.

Q:  Your favorite author ?

JD Kell: It changes. I really like Russell Banks. I think that his characters have a quiet desperation to them. When I was in junior high and high school, I would have told you that my favorite authors were Stephen King and Clive Barker, but today I enjoy character studies more. I loved Barbara Kingsolver’s, The Poisonwood Bible..Jonathan Franzen’s The Corrections….Rick Moody’s, The Ice Storm.

Q: Your favorite quote ?

JD Kell: I can’t give you the source, but somebody told me once that “if you want to write, and you don’t write, then you don’t really want to write.”

Q: Any last words, you would like to leave the readers of the site?

JD Kell: Keep writing. Thanks a lot:) Jen.

LUNCH
By: JD Kell

Lunch takes a look at two overweight friends, and when one comes back from college a different person. Leaving her friend Leslie looking through the glass window. When I read this story, I was overwhelm on how I felt sorry for the character Leslie, hearing her thoughts as others watch her eat, thinking how hideous she looks. JD Kell does a great job in this short story, it’s a perfect hidden gem, one that should not be missed.

Q & A with Fancie
Novel: Transformation Of Anna

Q: So how did “ The Transformation Of Anna “ come to light?

Fancie: The first sentence of the book is, “It wasn’t a nightmare, but it felt like one to Anna.” I lied here. It really was a nightmare. Much of the beginning chapter came directly from a dream I had. Other scenes to the dream are littered throughout the book. After I woke, I recorded the experience in my journal. Now, several years later, the three that billowed from the gutter drain came alive in ideas for a book. I had to start typing.

Q:  What other projects are you working on?

Fancie: The Transformation of Anna is the first book in a series. The Chronicles of Shilo Manor. I’m currently writing book two, Gryffin, and outlining book three, Bridging the Realms. Aside from the Chronicles, I also have a consecutive series called Aumelan. Book one, The Hollow Hand is being edited. Books two and three, The World Beneath the Rock and The World of the Sun, are under revision. Book four, The Water’s of Tiger Rod, is still being written. The final two books, Kingdom Rise and Blessed of the Gods, are only outlined. Yeah, I have too many voices in my head. Wink But, I love my characters and can’t set them aside. They have to live. It’s no wonder that I spend half my life turning around with these other worlds in my head.

Q: How long have you been writing?

Fancie: I started writing as a teen. In fact, Aumelan is taken from short stories I wrote then. I’m not going to admit my age, but it was quite a while ago. Smile Adult responsibilities got in the way of keeping up with my writing, but, now I can get back to it. It was so fun to go back and re-read what I wrote as a youth. I’m determined to eventually have full novels written about many of the short stories. ( Like I did The Hollow Hand ). Some of the topics are just too fun to leave in a memory box.

Q: Who or what has been your inspiration for writing ?

Fancie: Aside from the muse that keeps whispering in my ear? Probably my mother. She wrote poetry and is very creative. She’s my guardian angel and loving example. But, God has to be the most important inspiration giver here. He helps me focus and get the words flowing. If I have any talent at writing, it’s because he gifted me with it. Correct grammar is one thing. Story telling is another.

Q: Can you give the readers some insight  on how the story will take shape with each chapter?

Fancie: A blow by blow? I don’t know about that. Lol. But the transformation of Anna isn’t just that. The Wizards of Shilo Manor are in dispute over what happened. Cole, the eldest, pushed the limits of their principles when he sealed that spell with a kiss. He’s compelled to watch over her and this leads to complications concerning her “harvesting”. Can I say, reincarnated love? Okay, I just did. And wow, Cole’s beside himself. You ever try to unbind a soul? Right. Not an easy task, if it’s possible at all. Poor Anna. Poor Cole.

Q: This is something I’ve been experimenting with, what’s your favorite quote?

Fancie:  We don’t see the world as it is, we see the world as we are. Everyone has his own point of view. The color blue to me may be cerulean to someone else. One might see a person as a thief, whereas another might see him as a desperate individual trying to survive. However we view life, I think it’s important to realize that others have a right to view it as they see fit. Barring hurting others, of course.

Q: Any last words you would like to share with the readers on the site?

Fancie: Keep reading and writing. Exercise your imagination. There are a lot of new worlds and experiences out there to visit. Open your minds to new possibilities. And when something touches you, be sure to share. Thanks for your interest. The Chronicles continue.

Novel:  The Transformation of Anna

My Rating: 4.o out of  5

The Transformation of Anna is by far the delightful hidden treasure many readers will enjoy to read. The first few paragraphs  jump of the page as Anna tries to flee from a group of attackers. The ending of the chapter in itself leaves many question as what will happen next?

I call this one a hidden treasure, beacause of it’s storytelling and description. With the plot yet reveal and so many questions to be answer, that makes a reader keep their eyes glue to the computer screen.
